SYMPTOMS
If you set the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Word
Table properties for an OLE-embedded document and then call the Close method of
the document object, you may receive the following error message, and Word
stops responding, or "hangs":

RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from
Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this
article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality.

recommends that you wait for the next service release that contains this hotfix.

Turn On the Fix
To turn on the fix that is described in this article, follow these
steps.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Quit Word.
- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- In the Open box, type
regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options]
- On the Edit menu, point to
New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type SmartServerObjRefTracking, and
then press ENTER.
- Right-click SmartServerObjRefTracking, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type
1, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
