XCCC: Error Message Loop Occurs If You Try to Run the DomainPrep Utility (319566)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the setup.exe /vdomainprep=1 command to run the Mobile Information Server DomainPrep utility, you may receive the following error message:
The necessary Active Directory objects required by Mobile Information Server already exist in your domain.
You do not need to run DomainPrep. Click OK to exit setup.
However, if you run Setup.exe, you receive the following error message:
Setup has determined that you need to add users and groups before proceeding. Run setup.exe /vdomainprep=1 with domain admin permissions.
These error messages create an endless loop of messages that prevents you from completing Setup.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if one or more of the accounts or groups that are created by the Mobile Information Server DomainPrep utility still exist in the domain.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, replace any Mobile Information Server system accounts or groups that may have been removed. If you delete these accounts and groups, you can run DomainPrep if no servers remain in the environment. After you remove either the accounts or the groups, run setup.exe /vdomainprep=1 again.

If Mobile Information Server servers still exist, do not delete the accounts. If you do so, the servers fail, and you must re-create any deleted accounts or groups, and then run Setup.exe again.

The following list contains the Mobile Information Server system accounts and groups:
  • HTTP Connector
  • Microsoft Mobility Admins
  • Message Processor
  • Message Processors (group)
  • Enteventsource
  • Message Connectors (group)
  • Mobile Information Server Mobile Users (group)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
