XADM: How to Remove the ADC Global Names Attribute from Exchange 5.5 Server Recipients (319474)

If you have configured and run a Recipient Connection Agreement from Microsoft Windows 2000 Server to Exchange Server, in Active Directory Connector (ADC), and then you use the Windows 2000 Users and Computers snap-in to remove user accounts or e-mail attributes, you must also remove the ADC-Global-Names attribute from Exchange Server 5.5 computer recipients. You must complete this procedure before you establish a new Recipient Connection Agreement between Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 Server.

If this procedure is not completed, Exchange Server 5.5 user accounts and mailboxes may be deleted, and you must perform a restore from backup.

There are two methods to resolve this behavior. You can use the first method if there are few recipients to modify. You can use the second method if you have several recipients to modify and you want to automate the process by using a bulk directory export and you want to import by using a Comma Separated Values (.csv) file.

Method 1: Manual Removal Process

From Exchange Server 5.5 computer recipients, you can verify that the ADC-Global-Names attribute exists.

WARNING: If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program (admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.

1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program in raw mode by typing the following at a command prompt:

   c:\exchsrvr\bin\admin /r

2. In Microsoft Exchange Administrator, select a server recipient that has a mailbox, click File, and then click RAW Properties.
3. In the Properties dialog box for the user, view the list of object attributes (the list is alphabetical). At the top of the list verify that the ADC-Global-Names attribute is present.
4. To remove the ADC-Global-Names attribute, select the ADC-Global-Names attribute, click Remove, and then click Apply.
   
   Note Make sure that you remove the ADC-Global-Names values for all the affected users.

Method 2: Automating Removal Process

If you have many recipients that must have this attribute removed, you can automate the process by using a .csv file with the following three headers:

• Obj-Class
• Directory Name
• ADC-Global-Names

Note The following example assumes that you use a .csv file that has the name "ADC-Global-Names.csv".

1. Copy the .csv file to your Exchange Server 5.5 computer's hard disk.
   
   Note If you have a limited number of mailboxes that you can export to a floppy disk, this procedure can be good to use because you must use Microsoft Excel to view, and then modify, the exported file.
2. Open Microsoft Exchange Administrator, and then on the Tools menu, click Directory Export.
3. Verify that the correct Exchange Server 5.5 computer name is selected.
4. Verify that the Export File is the destination file that you want:

   ADC-Global-Names.csv

5. Under Export Objects, verify that the Mailboxes check box is selected.
6. Click the Export button.
   
   This procedure exports the following three attributes for each Mailbox object on this Exchange Server 5.5 computer to the destination .csv file:
   • Obj-Class
   • Directory Name
   • ADC-Global-Names
7. When the export is complete, open the .csv file.
   
   Note You must do this procedure on a computer that has Excel installed.
8. If the .csv file is present, remove the attribute under the ADC Global Names header, (delete the column contents, except for the header).
9. Replace the contents of each row in the column (currently the ADC-Global-Names attribute), with the following text:

   ~del

   This deletes the ADC-Global-Names attribute when you run a directory import.
10. Save the changes in .csv format.
11. Open Microsoft Exchange Administrator, and then on the Tools menu, click Directory Import.
12. In the Directory Import dialog box, verify that the correct Exchange Server 5.5 computer name is selected.
13. Verify that the Import File text box points to:

    ADC-Global-Names.csv

14. You can run the export again to verify that the ADC-Global-Names attribute no longer exists.
