FIX: Unable to Change a Link to an Embedded Excel Workbook in a Word 2000 Document (319052)

SYMPTOMS

You are unable to change the link for an Excel workbook in a Word document if the workbook is a shape (as opposed to an inline shape). You may not receive an error when you change the link, but the link is not changed, as you would expect. Or, when you change the link, you may receive an access violation (or an invalid protection fault) and then Word will shut down.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you try to:
  • Display the Links dialog box in Word to modify the link. -or-

  • Change the SourceFullName property of the shape from a Visual Basic for Applications macro or from an Automation client.
Note that the problem may only occur when you are modifying a link for a document that was created on a different computer.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office 2000 Public Update that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

This problem has also been corrected in Microsoft Word 2002.
