PRJ: How to Open Microsoft Project 2000 Files in Microsoft Project for Macintosh (317464)

Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project 4.0 for the Macintosh do not share a common format. The Microsoft Project Export format (MPX format) is no longer supported by Microsoft Project 2000; however the MPX format is necessary to move files from a Windows platform to a Macintosh platform. For this reason, you need to use Microsoft Project 98 to mediate between the two versions.

To transfer a file from Microsoft Project 2000 to Microsoft Project for the Macintosh 4.0, follow these steps:

1. In Microsoft Project 2000, open the project.
2. On the File menu, click Save As.
3. In the Save as type box, point to the arrow, click Project 98, click Save, and then click OK.
4. Quit Microsoft Project 2000, and then start Microsoft Project 98.
5. Open the project, and then click Save As on the File menu.
6. In the Save As Type box, point to the arrow, and then click MPX 4.0. Click Save.

The file in MPX format can be read in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh version 4.0.

NOTE: When you change a file from Microsoft Project 2000 format to Microsoft Project 98 format, some scheduling changes occur due to differences in the scheduling engines. When you change the file further from Microsoft Project 98 format to MPX format, additional changes occur in the file. The resultant project does not exactly match the original file. Greater changes occur with more complex features, such as leveling.
