Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2 Public Folder Management Uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol Distributed Authoring and Versioning (316804)

SUMMARY

This article describes that public folder management through Exchange System Manager has been enhanced to provide improved performance and error reporting in Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Before Exchange 2000 SP2, public folder management through Exchange System Manager was performed through Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Internet Publishing. Exchange 2000 SP2 no longer uses this OLE DB Provider. Instead, Exchange System Manager performs Hypertext Transfer Protocol Distributed Authoring and Versioning (HTTP-DAV) calls.

In earlier Exchange Server versions, the most common issue associated by using OLE DB Provider for Internet Publishing was the generic error code, "80004005". Most public folder management issues in Exchange System Manager returned this error code. Therefore, troubleshooting public folder management issues was difficult for a user because this single error code was displayed for many issues. In addition, this single error code did not provide additional error message reporting.

The new public folder management interface in Exchange System Manager provides more error codes, as well as detailed error messages. Potential error messages that you may receive are similar to the following:

Ensure that your Default Virtual Server is running and it is configured correctly.

Ensure that the settings on your default Web site are correct and refresh the Public Folder tree.

Ensure that your HTTP Virtual servers are all started and check that the WWW service is running.

The HTTP service used by Public Folders is not available, possible causes are that Public stores are not mounted and the Information Store service is not running.
