DNS Server Caches the Localhost Name (316716)

SYMPTOMS

When UNIX and other clients that use a Windows 2000 DNS server or a Windows NT 4.0 DNS server for name resolution query for the name "localhost," they may obtain an IP address other than the loopback address of 127.0.0.1.

CAUSE

If the DNS server resolves a name and the response contains the name "localhost" and an IP address in the Authoritative and Additional sections, DNS improperly caches that information. Subsequent queries to the DNS server for the name "localhost" result in the return of the cached information.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the method for your operating system.

Windows 2000

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
