The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
- Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
This article was previously published under Q316025 SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Visio for the first time, you receive the following error message:
Error starting program
Vislib.dll is linked to missing export Mfc42.dll.
CAUSE
If your computer is running other programs (such as virus-protection programs) when you install Visio, some system files may not be properly updated. If errors occur, the program that controls the system update, Mssup.exe, does not display error messages. As a result, you receive the error message when you start Visio the first time.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, copy the latest version of Mfc42.dll to the Visio10 folder (for example, to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10). To do this, follow these steps. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps. - Click Start, and then click Search.
- In the left pane, click All files and folders.
- Under All or part of the file name, type mfc42.dll, and then click Search.
- In the Search Results list, right-click the Mfc42.dll file that has the latest modified date, and then click Copy.
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Browse to your Visio10 folder, right-click it, and then click Paste.
- Quit Explorer, and then start Visio.
