Unable to Set Different E-Mail Programs for Different Users (315240)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
This article was previously published under Q315240 For a Microsoft Windows 2000 version of this article, see 309292.
SYMPTOMS
When you try to change to a different e-mail program, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
- After an administrator changes the e-mail program on the Programs tab of Internet Options, you are unable to specify a different e-mail program.
- If a user who is not an administrator tries to change the e-mail program on the Programs tab of Internet Options, the change does not take effect.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the e-mail program that is specified on the Programs tab of Internet Options is not stored on a single-user basis, and only administrators can change this setting.
This setting specifies which e-mail program runs for:
- A mailto: Uniform Resource Identifier (URI).
- Programs that make Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) calls.
- The Send Page by E-Mail command in Internet Explorer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
You can customize the e-mail link in the Start menu on a single-user basis. However, you cannot specify the default e-mail program on a single-user basis.
