PRJ2000: Error Message When You Try to Enter a Task in Microsoft Project: The Value Is Not Valid (314585)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q314585

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to enter a task in Microsoft Project, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
The value is not valid. This is not a valid duration, or is outside the range for this field.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have the time separator (delimiter) set as a space. A space is not a valid time separator character when you enter time values.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, change the time separator to a space after each of the times has been entered in Microsoft Project. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Ensure that all of the times for your current project have been entered before you perform these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click the Date, Time, Language and Regional Options tool.
  3. Click Regional and Language Options, and then click Customize.
  4. Click the Time tab.
  5. Place the pointer in the Time separator box, and then press the SPACEBAR key.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
