Service Availability Monitoring in MOM 2000 May Fill the Database with Informational Events (313550)

SYMPTOMS

The service availability checking and reporting functionality in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) agents may generate many events. The number of events that are generated depend on the frequency of the polling, the number of agents that report to the database, and the number of services that run on the monitored agent. The size of the data in the database could increase by as much as 30 percent over time.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because service availability checking and reporting is activated by default, is set to poll every 600 seconds, and is set to report every 3,600 seconds.

WORKAROUND

You can change the reporting frequency in the MOM Administrator console. Expand Configuration, Global Settings, and then Agent Settings. On the Service Availability tab, change the Check for Service Availability setting from the default value of 3600. You can increase this value to reduce the number of events that are reported. Note that there is a 1:6 ratio between checking for availability and reporting availability.
