You Cannot Copy Files from DVD Movie Disks (313327)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to copy Video Object (.vob) files from a DVD disk, you may receive one of the following error messages:

In Windows XP:
Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the sector is encrypted.
In Windows 2000:
The maximum number of sectors that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded.
In Windows 98:
Data Error reading Drive D: Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you try to copy files from copy protected DVD disks.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, transfer these files to a hard disk for your personal use. To do so, you may consider obtaining a third-party .vob file that permits you to copy (RIP) DVD-based video files.

MORE INFORMATION

To discourage unauthorized usage, MPEG-2 video format is frequently encrypted and stored on DVD disks as .vob files.
