XL2002: Digital Signatures Lost When You Use AutoRecover (313240)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a signed file, you receive the following message:
You have modified a signed project. You do not have the correct key to sign this project. The signature will be discarded.
When you save the file, the digital signature is lost.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The Save AutoRecover info every n minutes check box is selected.
  • Excel has automatically saved the file since you opened it.
  • You do not have the necessary digital signature on your computer.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
