White speckles appear around picture borders in PowerPoint X for Mac slide show (312246)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac
This article was previously published under Q312246 SYMPTOMS
When you view a slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac, white speckles may be displayed around picture borders, particularly around the curved regions of a transparent picture.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if the graphic on the slide is a PNG file with a basic transparency mask, or if it is a Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) file that contains a color that is set to transparent.
To resolve this issue, download and install the latest Microsoft Office v. X for Mac service release.

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
- Use the image-editing software of your choice to eliminate the transparency mask in the PNG file. Specifically, set the background color of the PNG file to match the background color in the presentation.
-or- - Use the image-editing software of your choice to create a fringeless transparency. (This method may produce the best results.) Change the background of the image to a color that is not one of the colors already in use in the image, and which is a close match with the background of the presentation. If the fill tool in your image editor has a tolerance or anti-aliasing setting, test it to see what setting provides the best fill, with only a pixel or two overlap of the image. Most fill tools work best at about 25 to 30 percent of tolerance or anti-aliasing.
-or- - Open the image in the image-editing software of your choice, and then save it in a different file format.
After you have saved the edited image, replace the existing image in the presentation with the updated image.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This issue was first fixed in Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Service Release 1 (SR-1).
