Installing a Printer Driver for Windows NT4.0 in Windows 2000 Professional Prompts for the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM (311985)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that runs Windows 2000 Professional and has a Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 722C printer attached, when you try to install a printer driver for Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 so that you can share the printer with a computer that runs Windows NT 4.0, you may be prompted for the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM.

The prompt appears after you click the Sharing tab in the HP DeskJet 722C Properties dialog box and then click Additional Drivers.

The prompt also appears if you try to install a printer driver for Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 in Windows 2000.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because it is the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM that includes the needed printer drivers, in the \Printers\Nt4\Ntprint.inf file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, insert the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to install the printer drivers for Windows NT 4.0.

If the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM is not available, follow these steps:
  1. Install the appropriate Windows NT 4.0 printer driver on the computer that runs Windows NT 4.0 as though the HP DeskJet 722C printer is already on LPT1.
  2. In the Printers window, right-click the icon for the HP DeskJet 722C printer, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Ports tab, click Add Port.
  4. Click Local Port, and then click New Port to add a new local port that points to the share on the Windows 2000-based computer (\\computername\printer).
This information also applies to printer drivers for Windows 95 or Windows 98.
