FIX: LDAP search error when you try to use a full name to search the Display Name field (311829)

SYMPTOMS

If you configure a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server and try to search the LDAP server by opening your Address Book, clicking Tools, clicking Find, and then entering a full user name in the Display Name field in the Find dialog box, you may receive the following error messages:
Unable to display results because too many entries in the Internet Directory match your search criteria.

-and-

The search could not be completed. MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED.

-and-

Cannot contact the LDAP server (81) error.

-and-

Microsoft Outlook does not recognize SearchString
where SearchString is the text you typed in the Find dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the latest Office XP Service Pack, test to see if the issue continues to occur. If the issue continues to occur, follow the steps in the "More Information" section to create the NoDisplayNameSearch registry key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).

Use the following steps after you have installed the latest Office XP Service Pack:
  1. Quit Office XP.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Verify that the following key exists. If it does, go to step 5.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\LDAP

  5. If the key does not exist, you must create it. To do so:
    1. Locate and then select the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook

    2. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
    3. Type ldap, and then press the ENTER key.
  6. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  7. Type the following name for the new value:

    NoDisplayNameSearch

  8. Press the ENTER key.
  9. Right-click the new string value name, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  11. Exit Registry Editor.
