SYMPTOMS

This article describes how to disable the secondary credentials dialog box that is displayed when you start Outlook and log on to a Microsoft Exchange Server computer that is in a different domain than the client.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1), and then add the following registry key to the computer that is running the Outlook client.

Add the Registry Keys

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


For the change to take effect, add the following registry keys.
  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit,and then click OK.
  4. If you want to control this behavior on your own computer, add the following registry key:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\RPC\

    Value Name: DisablePWDialog
    Data Type: DWord
    Value Data: 1

    If you are an administrator and you want to use group policies to control this behavior on computers on your network, add the following registry key:

    HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\RPC\

    Value Name: DisablePWDialog
    Data Type: DWord
    Value Data: 1

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

After the service pack has been installed and the registry has been modified, the new dialog box replaces the secondary credentials dialog box. This means that the new dialog box is displayed in the following scenarios:
  • When you attempt to log on to an existing Exchange Server profile that resides on a domain that is different than the desktop domain.
  • When you try to set up a new profile on a different domain.
  • When you set the Logon network security setting to none, even if you are in the correct domain.
The new dialog box displays the following message:
   This account is currently restricted.
