Recipient Update Service does not stamp contacts with new primary SMTP address (309723)

This article was previously published under Q309723

SYMPTOMS

If a recipient policy is configured with two SMTP proxy addresses such as A.com and B.com, and A.com is the primary SMTP address, a new mailbox is stamped with both SMTP proxy addresses as follows:

SMTP  A.com
smtp   B.com

However, in the properties of Contacts, the proxy addresses appear as follows:

smtp   B.com
SMTP  contact@domain.com

If you modify the recipient policy so that B.com is changed to be the primary SMTP address and then rebuild the Recipient Update Service, the mailboxes are stamped with the new primary SMTP address, but the contacts do not change.

CAUSE

The contacts are not affected by changes to the SMTP proxy addresses in the recipient policy because they use the TargetAddress attribute for addressing information instead of the proxyAddresses attribute.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
