XCON: NNTP Servers Cannot View Newsgroup Folder That Appears on the Master Server (309711)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q309711

SYMPTOMS

When you set up a master/slave relationship in Exchange 2000, and you create a Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server folder (newsgroup), the folder does not replicate to the slave computer unless the folder has contents.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you create the newsgroup by using the Rgroup.vbs utility or by using the Exchange 2000 System Manager (ESM). Creating a newsgroup does not create a control message to the folder, so there is nothing to replicate.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a newsgroup by using a control message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Control messages can automatically create or delete newsgroups and can cancel postings. Control messages are generated through NNTP client software, NNTP utilities, and NNTP servers. When you create the newsgroup by using a control message, and you correctly set up your feeds to replicate the control message to the slave computers, the newsgroup shows up as soon as the replication is complete.
