XADM: Exchange 2000 Does Not Prevent Mailbox Creation on a Front-End Server (309709)

SYMPTOMS

You can create a mailbox on a front-end server that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server; however, you cannot log on to any mailboxes on a front-end server. In a front-end and back-end server scenario, Microsoft recommends that you create mailboxes and public folders on the back-end server only.

Exchange 2000 does not prevent you from creating mailboxes on the front-end server; however, Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) clients may not be able to gain access to these front-end server mailboxes. Also, if you use OWA to log on to a mailbox that resides on a front-end server, you may exhaust the available server memory.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
