SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message:
Fatal Error #6834

An unknown error has occurred.
In addition, Windows may stop responding (hang) when you connect to the Internet by using America Online (AOL).

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your computer is infected with the W95.SoFunny.Worm@m virus.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft does not provide software that can detect or remove computer viruses. If you suspect or confirm that your computer is infected with a virus, obtain current antivirus software. The W95.SoFunny.Worm@m virus is a password-stealing Trojan horse program that arrives attached to AOL Messenger instant messages or to e-mail messages. The e-mail attachments are named "Sofunny.exe" or "Love.exe".

This virus copies itself to a file named "Msdos423.exe", which is configured to run automatically when Windows starts. If Msdos423 is displayed as a Startup item in the Startup group, your computer may be infected with this virus. To view the items in the Startup group:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Startup tab.
  4. If Msdos423 is listed, you may be infected with this virus.
