Contacts Imported from a .ctt File Are Not Added to a New Group in Windows Messenger (309578)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.6
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.5
This article was previously published under Q309578 SYMPTOMS
When you sign into Windows Messenger 4.5 or 4.6 and import contacts from a .ctt file, the import process may add the contacts in the file to the existing contact list rather than rather than to the new group that the import process automatically creates.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because groups are not exported to saved contact lists. Therefore, when you import contacts from a saved file, the import process does not create new groups or add contacts to existing groups. The import process adds all imported contacts to the Other Contacts group.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, create a new group after the import, and then manually move the contacts to the new group. To create a new group and move the contacts to the new group, follow these steps:
- Double-click the MSN Messenger icon on the taskbar.
- On the Tools menu, click Manage Groups.
- Click Add a Group.
- Type a name for your group, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the contact that you want to move to the new group, and then click Move Contact to.
- Click the name of the group.
