WD2002: When You Open Word Web Page in Internet Explorer, Print Dialog Box Appears and Word Quits (309527)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP

This article was previously published under Q309527

SYMPTOMS

When you do the following
  1. Use Microsoft Internet Explorer to open a Web page that was created in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click Edit with Microsoft Word.
the following events occur:
  1. The document opens in Word.
  2. The Print dialog box opens.
When you then click OK, Cancel, or Close to close the Print dialog box, Word quits.

CAUSE

When you install Microsoft Office XP by using the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel, the Edit key in the Windows registry that allows Word to edit Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files is not written. As a result, when you attempt to edit an HTML file in Word, the PrintWithOptions registry key is read instead. This causes the Print dialog box to open when you open the HTML file in Word from Internet Explorer.

When the PrintWithOptions key is used to open Word, Word only opens to print the file. Therefore, when you close the Print dialog box, Word quits.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Open the Document in Word

Open the Word document directly in Word. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, select the Word document that you want to open, or type the full path to the document in the File name box, and then click Open.

Method 2: Register the Msohtmed.exe File

To complete the correct registration of Word in the Windows registry, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all Windows programs.
  2. Click Start and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, click Browse.
  4. Browse to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10

  5. In the Office10 folder, select Msohtmed.exe and then click Open.
  6. In the Run dialog box, click in the Open box, and then move the insertion point to the end of the path. After the final quotation mark, type /regserver.

NOTE: The path in the Open box should now look similar to the following example:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSOHTMED.EXE" /regserver

  7. Click OK.

NOTE: There will be no visual indication that the command completed correctly.
