SYMPTOMS

When you use the Remove option on the Action list in Exchange Server Setup to remove Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you may receive the following error messages after you restart the server:

Application popup: exmgmt.exe - Unable To Locate DLL : The dynamic link library dsaccess.DLL could not be found in the specified path C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin;.;C:\WINNT\System32;C:\WINNT\system;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\System32\Wbem.

Service Control Manager : At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.

Additionally, the following event ID error messages may be displayed in the System log of the Event Viewer:

CAUSE

Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes a new service that is named Exchange Management Service (Exmgmt.exe). The new Exchange 2000 SP2 Message Tracking Center functionality, and the new Directory Access tab, which is available on the Server Property page in Exchange System Manager, are dependant on this service to function.

When you use the Remove option on the Action list, which is located on the Component Selection screen in the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard, to remove Exchange, the Exchange Management Service is not removed. If the service remains on your computer, the service does not cause problems on the server. However, the application error messages and event ID messages still occur when you restart your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods to remove the Exchange Management Service.

Method One

Use the uninstall option that is supplied with the Exmgmt.exe file.

To run Exmgmt.exe after you remove Exchange 2000, you require several .dll files from the Exchange 2000 SP2 installation files. Because the Exchsrvr\Bin folder and the Exmgmt executable file still exist, you can copy the absent .dll files into the Bin subfolder. You require the following .dll files:
- Pttrace.dll
- Exchmem.dll
- Epoxy.dll
- Dsaccess.dll
You can locate these .dll files by extracting the Exchange 2000 SP2 self-extracting executable file into a Temp folder. After the files are extracted, the .dll files that you must obtain are located in the following folder:
Server\Setup\I386\Exchange\Bin
After you copy the .dll files, run the following command from a command prompt:
path\exmgmt /uninstall
NOTE: No messages or alerts appear throughout the removal process. However, the Microsoft Exchange Management service is removed from the list of installed services after the removal process is complete. To view the installed services, right-click My Computer, click Manage, expand Services and Applications, and then click Services.

Method Two

Remove the MSExchangeMGMT registry key from the registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMGMT
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
