The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q309454

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Visio 2002, a page that contains an empty Previous versions found box may be displayed. If you choose to remove all earlier versions, you may receive a message that is similar to one of the following:

Please insert the disk labeled Product name

The path 'Please insert the disk labeled Product name cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package file name.msi in a folder from which you can install the product.

The feature you are trying to use is on CD-ROM or the network. Insert the Visio Disk.

Additionally, if you click Cancel on either message, you receive the message again. This behavior may repeat itself several times. The message that prompts you for an .msi file asks for a different .msi file each time.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • You install Microsoft Visio 2002 on a computer where Microsoft Visio 2000 was previously installed and then removed.
  • Visio 2002 Setup detects files that remain on your hard disk from the earlier installation of Visio 2000.
  • You select the Remove all previous versions (recommended) option. (This is the default setting.)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the method that is appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Keep All Earlier Versions

On the Previous versions screen of the Setup program, click Keep all previous versions, and then click Next to continue the Setup program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click Cancel on each error message that appears during the Setup program. After you do this, you cannot continue the setup of Visio 2002.

MORE INFORMATION

If the Setup program detects an earlier version of Microsoft Visio installed on your computer, the Setup program lists the previous version in the Previous versions found box, and then removes it for you by default.

In certain situations, the previous version of Visio that the Setup program detects may not be correctly listed in the Previous versions found box. Therefore, when you click Next, you experience the symptoms that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. The Setup program tries to remove the files from the earlier version of Visio. However, it prompts you for the location of each .msi file.
