This article was previously published under Q309453 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you attempt to create a new project file based on an existing template by selecting that template on the Project Template tab, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the Microsoft Project 2000 disk and click OK.
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'INSTALL.MSI' in the box below.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you select the Install Now option when you install Microsoft Project. When the Install Now option is selected during Setup, the Microsoft Project template files are set to Install on First Use. The template files are not installed to your hard disk until you use them for the first time.
As a result, if the Microsoft Project CD-ROM is not in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive (or the network location of the Microsoft Project installation files is unavailable), and you attempt to open a template, Microsoft Project prompts you to insert the CD-ROM (or locate the network resource) to install the template.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, customize your installation of Microsoft Project by setting Microsoft Project Templates to the Run from my computer installation state. When you do this, all Microsoft Project templates are installed to your hard disk.
To do this, follow these steps. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps. - Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click Microsoft Project, and then click Change.
- Click Add or Remove Features.
- Expand Microsoft Project (if it is not already expanded), and then expand Microsoft Project for Windows. Click the arrow next to Microsoft Project Templates, and then click Run from My Computer.
- Click Update Now.
- When you are prompted, insert your Microsoft Project CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click OK. Or, if you are installing from a network location, type the path to the Microsoft Project installation files, or click Browse to locate the path to the installation package, and then click Open.
