Cannot Import Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1 Playlists to Windows Media Player for Windows XP (309319)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to import a playlist from Windows Media Player version 7 or 7.1, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the selected playlist. The format of the playlist is either invalid or is not recognized.

Error# C00D119D
After you receive this error message, the media may not be playable from the playlist.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the media references in the playlist have quotation marks in the metadata. For example, this problem can occur if the title of a track was:

The Windows Sound "Radio Edit" Version

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, open the ASX playlist in Notepad and remove the extra quotation marks from the appropriate parameter values, or re-create the play list in Windows Media Player for Windows XP.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
