An Access Violation Occurs in Event Viewer in Finnish Windows 2000 (309291)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using a Finnish Windows 2000-based computer to view event log files that are written on other computers, or you are running a program that logs events but does not register a message DLL on a Finnish-based computer, an access violation may occur in Mmc.exe when you try to view an event log record with an unknown source.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the insertion strings for the following English message are swapped in the Finnish translation ("%s" is before "%u"):

The description for Event ID ( %u ) in Source ( %s ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event:

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
