When an Exchange 2000 server has less than 15 percent free disk space and is performing indexing, the server begins a master merge. If the hard disk drive is near capacity, the master merge begins and will consume one of the computer's processors.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.MORE INFORMATION
A master merge will be attempted every five minutes, and if the disk space remains above 85 percent, a server will spend virtually all of its time master merging instead of crawling. Therefore, the crawled index will become increasingly out-of-date, leading to data loss.
