Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2 addresses this issue by ignoring the attachment when the body part is missing, and completes the entire message conversion.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.MORE INFORMATION
When Exchange 2000 attempts to process meeting requests and responses that have invalid attachments, Exchange 2000 processes these through the calendar converter, converting them from Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) to Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI). Calendar objects may not be processed because the body part for the attachment is missing.
The IMAIL process for the calendar converter fails on the entire
message and this causes Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to retry the IMAIL conversion indefinitely. The MIME is invalid and causes a performance problems because the converter does not know to ignore the bad attachment.
NOTE: The IMAIL component of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is a flexible conversion service used by the information store between Internet and MAPI messages, which allows for the interoperability between Internet and MAPI clients.
