BUG: Favorites That Are Saved on Windows 2000 Do Not Work in Windows XP (309103)

SYMPTOMS

Objects that are saved to the Favorites folder under Microsoft Windows 2000 (Microsoft Management Console [MMC] version 1.2) cannot be accessed on a Windows XP-based computer (MMC version 2.0).

When you try to open the Favorites folder on a computer that is running Windows XP, if the Favorites folder contains objects that are saved on a Windows 2000-based computer, you receive the following error message:
The specified node could not be located.

CAUSE

MMC 2.0 implements storage of favorites differently than previous versions.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, delete the favorites that are failing, and add them again under Windows XP.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. On Windows 2000, open Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Add the Event Viewer and Computer Management snap-ins.
  3. On the Favorites menu, click Add to favorites. Add the following items to the Favorites folder:
    • Event Viewer
    • Application
    • Security
    • System

  4. Close MMC. When you are prompted, save the console setting as a new file name.
  5. Open the saved console file in Windows XP.
  6. Click Favorites from the menu bar. You receive the above-mentioned error message.
