SYMPTOMS

When you place a new Infrared Data Association (IrDA) fax or modem device in range of the infrared port on your computer, the device is detected but the device may not be correctly installed.

If you manually install the device, the device may not be correctly enumerated in the Ports (COM and LPT) / Virtual Infrared COM port subtree. Instead, the device may appear under Infrared devices. Device Manager may display two instances of the device, but only one of the instances may work. The Modem tool is displayed in Control Panel, but Windows may not be able to communicate with the device.

Note that mobile phones that have data features may also experience this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when a series of "service hints" bits are sent to the computer during infrared device enumeration. The service hints bits pass information about the features that the mobile phone supports. Windows uses these bits to determine the registry location where the information from the modem .inf file must be copied.

When service bits indicate that both data and fax features are supported, the information is incorrectly copied to registry.
