This article was previously published under Q308138 SYMPTOMS
After you open a Word or Excel document from a Web site and then make changes to the document, you cannot resave it to the Web site, and you may experience the following behavior: - The Save command on the File menu is unavailable (dimmed).
- When you click Save As on the File menu, you are prompted to save the file on your local computer.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:
- You have Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or later installed on your local computer.
-and- - You open the Word or Excel document by using Internet Explorer.
This behavior occurs because in Office 2000 SR-1, if you open a Word or Excel document from a Web site, you receive a read-only copy of that document. You cannot directly save the document to the Web site by using the Save command.
This behavior is by design. WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, save the document to your local hard disk, and then copy it to a Web folder that points to the remote Web server computer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Internet Explorer, locate the document that you want to edit, and then open it.
- Edit the document or worksheet, and then click Save As on the File menu.
- Locate the folder on your local hard disk where you want to save the file, and then click Save.
- Quit Internet Explorer.
If you are prompted to save the changes to your file, click Yes. - Create a Web folder that points to the folder on the remote Web server computer.
- Drag the saved document from the local hard disk to the open Web folder. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing file, click Yes.
