Game Pad Does Not Appear in Device Manager or Game Controller Properties (306588)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the SideWinder Game Pad USB, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The device is not listed in the Game Controller tool in Control Panel.
  • The device is listed with a yellow exclamation point (!) in Device Manager.
  • You receive the following error message in the Device status dialog box:
    This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10.) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
  • The device is not available in Gaming Options.
  • The HID-compliant Game Controller and USB Human Interface Device are both installed correctly in the Device Manager.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the controller is installed on a computer that has the Microsoft SideWinder version 3.0 or 3.02 software installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type drvdata.bin drvidx.bin.
  3. Make sure that the Include subfolders check box is selected.
  4. In the Look in box, click the Windows installation hard disk, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the list of found files, rename the Drvdata.bin and Drvidx.bin files:
    1. Right-click the Drvdata.bin file, and then click Rename.
    2. Type drvdata.old, and then press ENTER.
    3. Right-click the Drvidx.bin file, and then click Rename.
    4. Type Drvidx.old, and then press ENTER.
  6. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.
  7. Make sure that you can view hidden files:
    1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
    3. Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.
    4. Click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box.
    5. Click Yes, and then click OK.
  8. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  9. In the File name box, type msjstick.inf, and then click Find Now.
  10. Double-click the Msjstick.inf file.
  11. Locate the following line under the [Microsoft] section, and then type a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of each of the line:

    %USB\VID_045E&PID_0007.DeviceDesc%=MSUSBGAMEPAD,USB\VID_045E&PID_0007 %HID\VID_045E&PID_0007.DeviceDesc%=MSHIDUSBGAMEPAD,HID\VID_045E&PID_0007

  12. Locate the following line under the [Strings] section, and then type a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of the line:

    USB\VID_045E&PID_0007.DeviceDesc="Microsoft USB SideWinder Game Pad" HID\VID_045E&PID_0007.DeviceDesc="Microsoft USB SideWinder HID-compliant game controller

  13. On the File menu, click Save, and then click Close. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.
  14. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  15. Click the Device Manager tab.
  16. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers branch.
  17. Click Microsoft USB SideWinder Game Pad, click Remove, and then click OK.
  18. Click Refresh, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation process.
  19. Click Close.
