Group Policy Does Not Disable Shortcut Menus in the Thumbnail View (306362)

SYMPTOMS

The Disable Windows Explorer's Default Context Menu policy is not enforced if the Windows Explorer view is set to Thumbnail; the context menu, or shortcut menu, is still available in the Thumbnail view even when you disable the shortcut menu by using a Group Policy.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the thumbnail view object shortcut menu function does not check for the shell restriction.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows XP.

Steps To Reproduce the Problem

  1. Create a Group Policy object for an organizational unit that contains a Windows 2000 Professional-based client computer.
  2. Enable the following policy, and then save the Group Policy object:
    User Configuration \ 
    Administrative Templates \ 
    Windows Components
    Windows Explorer \ 
    "Disable Windows Explorer's Default Context Menu"
    					
  3. Restart the client computer to guarantee that the new policy is enabled.
  4. On the client desktop, double-click the My Documents folder, and then My Pictures folder.
  5. Click Thumbnails on the View menu, or click Organize Favorites on the Favorites menu.
  6. Right-click a file (or right-click an item in the Organize Favorites dialog box), to display a shortcut menu.
  7. Double-click another folder or item.

    Note that the Thumbnails item may continue to be available on the View menu.
