MMS Exchange LDAP Management Agent Reports Constraint Violation Errors (306200)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.1
  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2
  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2 SP1

This article was previously published under Q306200

SYMPTOMS

When you use the "$cd.o = $mv.o" attribute flow rule to flow the O (organization) attribute from Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) to Microsoft Exchange 5.5, you may receive the following error message:
Invalid modification response 19 - CONSTRAINT VIOLATION for object CN=name,cn=Recipients,ou=Support,o=Microsoft

CAUSE

Microsoft Exchange 5.5 uses the Organization attribute as part of the user's DN, and it is also the site name of the Exchange server. Exchange doesn't allow modification of this attribute. If the attribute were to be modified, the expected result is that the user would not be able to receive any mail. A constraint violation implies that an attempt was made to take action on a directory object that is illegal or unsupported.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not attempt to use the attribute flow rule that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. Also, if you are receiving the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, remove any outgoing (MMS to Exchange) attribute flow rules that reference the O attribute.
