SYMPTOMS

When you first install audio drivers, the volume for WAV and MIDI files may be set at the highest level for all audio cards. Also, the master volume is not consistent; it is either in the middle or at maximum volume. This behavior occurs with the following audio controllers:
  • Intel 82801AA
  • Via AC97
  • AC97 for Intel 82801AA

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the volume for WAV and MIDI files is controlled by Windows XP when you install an audio driver.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
