This article was previously published under Q305593 SYMPTOMS
After you install a specification-compliant PCMCIA device on a Windows 2000-based computer, the device may not function properly. Device Manager may display an exclamation mark next to the device and may display "Code 1 (CM_PROB_NOT_CONFIGURED)," which indicates that the device is not properly installed or is not functioning.
CAUSE
This behavior is associated with the use of direct and indirect addressing modes that are used in the operation of PCMCIA devices in Windows 2000. A PCMCIA device can be specifically designed to operate in indirect mode, but Windows 2000 currently performs all writes to configuration space only in direct mode.
