This article was previously published under Q305466

SYMPTOMS

Under the following conditions, Office Windows Installer shortcuts (.msi shortcuts) that you create from a roaming Windows 2000-based user profile may not point to the correct location or may not run correctly:
  • If you install either Microsoft Office XP or Microsoft Office 2000 for each user on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer

    -and-
  • If Windows Desktop Update that is included with both Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not installed on your computer

CAUSE

This behavior can occur under the following conditions:
  • If you assign Office XP or Office 2000 to a user by using Group Policy on a Windows 2000-based domain
  • If a user with a roaming profile logs onto a Windows 2000-based workstation and starts the assigned Office program
  • If that user then logs off of the Windows 2000-based workstation and then logs onto a Windows NT 4.0-based computer on which the Windows Desktop Update is not installed
  • If Office is installed on the Windows NT 4.0-based computer
