Setup Stops If You Try to Run Manual Agent Install While MOM Installation Is Still Running (305414)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

This article was previously published under Q305414

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), you may encounter difficulties if you try to run a manual agent installation while the MOM server installation is still running. The Manual Agent Install process may cause the MOM server Setup process to stop, and you may receive the following error message:
Could not load the DLL library
X:\....\LOCALS~1\Temp\InstUtil.dll
The specified module could not be found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Manual Agent Install process and the MOM server Setup process use the same location for temporary files. During the installation, one process may delete the temporary files that the other process is actively using.

This shared location is X:\...\username\LOCALS~1\Temp, where X is the drive where user documents and folders are stored and username is the user who is running the Setup program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, run the regular MOM server installation first. When that installation is complete, run the Manual Agent Install process.

Alternatively, use Managed Computer Rules and Scan Managed Computers options to install and configure agents instead of using the Manual Agent Install process.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
