ENC: How to Disable Programs Running in the Background (305286)

SYMPTOMS

When you play sound files in any of the Microsoft Encarta programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may not hear any audio.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a program is running in the background and preventing sound from being heard.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit these background programs to free up your system resources. To do this, follow these steps, as appropriate to your version of Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Quit all running programs that are displayed on your taskbar. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  2. In the Close Program dialog box, select each program (one at a time) that you want to quit.
  3. Click End Task to quit the selected program. Do not select and quit Windows Explorer and Systray (which are components of Windows).
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have quit all unnecessary tasks and programs.
Note Any task that you quit is automatically restarted when you restart the computer.

Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, and Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
  2. On the Applications tab, select each program that you want to quit.
  3. Click End Task to quit each program or task.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have quit all unnecessary tasks and programs.
