SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Links 2001, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Failed: 0x800400x - winerr unspecified create surface 0x1bf048 256x256 3d symmetry test

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you use Links 2001 on a computer in which the NeoMagic video adapter is installed, and you have hardware acceleration turned on.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow the steps appropriate to your operating system.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Quit all programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System.
  4. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.
  5. Adjust the Hardware acceleration setting to None.
  6. Click OK, and then click Close.
  7. When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Quit all programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Display.
  4. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
  5. On the Troubleshooting tab, adjust the Hardware acceleration setting to None.
  6. Click OK twice.
