System Monitor Is Missing in the DNS Counters and Event ID 3009 Is Logged (304541)

SYMPTOMS

After you install DNS on a Windows 2000-based domain controller, the System Monitor counters for DNS do not exist. In addition, one of the following events are logged in the Application log in Event Viewer:

Description:
Installing the performance counter strings for DNS failed. The Error code is DWORD 0 of the Record Data.

Description:
The Open Procedure for service "DNS" in DLL "C:\WINNT\system32\dnsperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. Status code returned is data DWORD 0.

RESOLUTION

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
At the command prompt type the following commands (and press ENTER after each command line):
CD %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32 UNLODCTR DNSPERF.INI LODCTR DNSPERF.INI
NOTE: DNS service must be running for the performance counters to be available.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
