Error Message During Restart After You Remove Audio Device from Traditional Chinese Windows Me (303867)

When you restart your computer after you remove an audio device from Configuration Manager, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:

After you receive this error message, your computer might not
start successfully until you first turn it off, and then completely remove power. If you press a key to continue and your computer has a network adapter and is connected to an active network, you may receive the following Mprexe error message. If you press a key to continue and your computer does not have a network adapter, you may receive the following Statemgr error message.

Nothing may occur if you click Continue; instead, you may need to press ENTER. After you do so, the operating system may become unstable,
and the screen may become blank. If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL, you may receive the original error message on a blue screen. If you then restart your computer in Safe mode, you may receive the same error messages, except "Explorer" and "Kernel32" appear in the error messages instead of "Mprexe" and "Statemgr". Your computer may stop responding (hang) if you receive the Kernel32 error message.
This problem has been observed in the Traditional Chinese-language version of Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). Other Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS) localizations (such as Simplified Chinese, Korean, and
Japanese) do not exhibit this problem. Also, this problem may not occur unless you are using the Chinese keyboard layout.
CAUSE
When your computer restarts, service routines within the System tool in Control Panel check for unconfigured multimedia devices. During this operation, the input focus is set to a hidden dialog box. When this process finishes, an error occurs during the IME object cleanup that keeps the operating system kernel from deleting a thread reference to the now-destroyed dialog box.
The problem occurs when the next program (or service) attempts to create a window. When the System kernel attempts to change the foreground window, it refers to the terminated thread, which results in the error message on a blue screen.
This usually occurs when the appropriate network component (MPREXE) attempts to raise the logon dialog box. If there is no need for a logon, the error message on a blue screen occurs when the System File Protection Statemgr feature checks for damaged or replaced files. If System File Protection is disabled, the first error message on a blue screen refers
to Explorer.
RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes.
