MSMQ: The Server List Is not Completed If the Registry Timer Value Is Empty (303421)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Message Queuing 2.0, there is an empty server list, and Message Queuing only works offline.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following registry values is less than 8 bytes long. The query for servers is not completed and the server list is empty.
  • hklm\software\microsoft\msmq\parameters
  • DSNextSiteListRefreshTime
  • DSNextEnterpriseListRefreshTime

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, only read the value from the registry if it is 8 bytes long. If the value is less than 8 bytes long, use default values.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
