This article was previously published under Q303325

SYMPTOMS

When you create a rule that both moves a message to another folder and marks the item as read in the same rule by using the Rules Wizard in Outlook 2002, the message may not be marked as read.

NOTE: The message is moved as specified in the rule.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem:
  • Create two rules. You can create one rule to mark the item as read, and another rule to move the message to another folder. To do this:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.
    2. Click New, and then click Start from a blank rule.
    3. Specify the condition for the messages that you want marked as read, and then click Next.
    4. Click to select the Mark it as Read check box, and then click Next.
    5. Specify any exceptions, and then click Next.
    6. Click Finish, and then click OK.
    7. Repeat these steps to create another rule that moves the messages to the desired folder

  • Set the rule to copy the message to the specified folder. You can set the rule to copy the messages to the specified folder instead of moving them. To do this:
    1. On the Tools menu, and then click Rules Wizard.
    2. Click New, and then click Start from a blank rule.
    3. Specify the condition for the messages that you want to copy, mark as read, and then click Next.
    4. Click to select the Move a copy to the specified folder check box.
    5. Click to select the Mark it as Read check box, and then click Next.
    6. Specify any exceptions, and then click Next.
    7. Click Finish, and then click OK.
