After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based Toshiba Tecra 8000 notebook computer to Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive an error message similar to the following when you start your computer:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00026A6 in VXD VMM(01) +
000016A6
The current application will be terminated.
If you press a key, a blank Windows desktop may be displayed.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if you have an outdated or incompatible infrared (IR) device driver installed.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, remove the Toshiba IR driver. To do this, follow these steps:
- Restart the computer in Safe mode. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start the computer. While the computer starts, press and hold the CTRL key.
- At the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu that appears, use the ARROW keys to select Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
- A message appears stating that "Windows is running in safe mode." Click OK.
- On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, click the plus sign the left of Infrared to expand the category.
- Under Infrared, click the IR device, and then click Remove.
- If you receive a prompt to restart the computer, click Yes.
