SYMPTOMS

Clipboard redirection may no longer work on the client computer when you are using the Windows 2000 Terminal Services client. When you try to paste information from the clipboard, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk

CAUSE

This problem can occur when a client has installed the Windows 2000 Terminal Services client, upgraded to the Windows XP Remote Desktop client, and then reinstalled the Windows 2000 Terminal Services client.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem after you reinstall the Windows 2000 Terminal Services client, you must manually re-create the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR registry key.
  1. Use Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) to view the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR

  2. Right-click the AddIns key, point to New, and then click Key.
  3. Name the value RDPDR, and then quit Registry Editor.
