SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) Site Builder, you may receive a prompt for NT LAN Manager (NTLM) logon credentials instead of a prompt for Microsoft Content Management Server logon credentials. After you supply the appropriate credentials for MCMS, and you log on to the Site Builder, you may be prompted for NTLM logon credentials when you try to preview a page, to post, to run a dependent report, or to perform similar actions.

CAUSE

You receive these prompts if both of the following conditions are true:
  • In the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) default Web site properties of the computer that is running MCMS, Anonymous access is turned off.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer security settings for the client computer are not configured appropriately for the local intranet zone.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, configure the Internet Explorer security settings for the client computer to include all local sites. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
  2. Click the Local intranet icon, and then click Sites.
  3. Make sure that Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones is selected.

Note If the Site Builder is installed on the computer that is running MCMS, you can manually add http://localhost to the list of intranet sites.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that the Site Builder uses Internet Explorer extensively in many of its operations. Therefore, the correct Internet Explorer security settings are important.

If Anonymous access in IIS is turned off, and if the intranet zone does not recognize the computer that you are trying to log on to, you are prompted for NTLM logon credentials. This behavior is expected in Microsoft Windows.

If Anonymous access in IIS turned on, the user is given access automatically. If the Web site is added manually to the local intranet zone, or if Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones is selected, you are not prompted for NTLM logon credentials because the intranet zone rules allow access.
