SYMPTOMS

After you create a new DNS server and change all of the information on your clients and servers to reflect the new DNS server name, the clients and servers may still dynamically register with the old server.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when the zone file is copied. If the zone file took the Start of Authority (SOA) record that still had the original servers name, clients are redirected to that server as the authoritative one. Note that this affects any queries that rely on the SOA record providing the name of the authoritative server. This issue applies to any situation that involves physically moving the zone file, such as moving an entire server, moving just one zone, and so on. Also, this applies to any DNS server, not just Microsoft DNS servers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the SOA record to reflect the new DNS server name.
